Michael O'Donel Bjarne Alexander was born on June 19 1936 and spent his early childhood in Ireland. His father, the object of Michael's awed admiration, was Hugh Alexander, a well-known chess Grandmaster who had defeated the Russian world champion Botvinnik and during the war became one of the most brilliant cryptographers at Bletchley Park; thereafter he was a pillar of its successor organisation, the Government Communications Headquarters at Cheltenham.
